Whilst the Hadrian’s Wall Path is a challenge over 10,000 of hikers walk the full length each year so is therefor an achievable endeavour. For the most part Hadrian’s Wall Path uses clear paths and tracks and has little climbing and descending making it one of the most easiest multiday treks in the UK. We are however walking between 7 and 15 miles each day for 7 days (see full itinerary below) so reasonable level of fitness is required. If you have any questions on fitness get in touch with Emma and she will happily chat to you in detail about the required fitness levels Contact Us.

You will be accompanied an experienced Mountain Leader who will lead the group and be there to help you along the way so no previous multi-day hiking experience is necessary. We also have a bag carrying service as an optional add on for those wanting to do the hike without the weight.

All accommodation (6 nights) are included in the price and are conveniently situated along the Hadrian’s Wall route! We will be staying in a mixture of hotels and bunk houses. All of our accommodation has electricity, charging points & either has private or shared showers & toilet facilities (see more details on facilities on the itinerary below). Rooms are shared with other ladies in the group but if you would like a private room/s please Contact Us.

You can take your own food or you can make use of the pubs, cafes and local shops to stock up supplies along the way. We will pass amenities each day and all of our evening stop overs have local shops, pubs & cafes.

Day 1 ♥

Bowness to Carlisle (15 miles)

Begin your Hadrian’s Wall adventure at the iconic sign in Bowness-on-Solway, marking the western end of this legendary Roman frontier. Step into history as you walk through stunning coastal scenery and rolling countryside, with views that capture the wild beauty of the Solway Firth. Along the way, enjoy the sense of adventure and anticipation that comes with starting this epic journey. After the day’s hike, rest and recharge at the charming County Hotel in Carlisle, the perfect base to relax and soak up the city’s welcoming atmosphere.

Day 2 ♥

Carlisle to Walton (13 miles)

Leave the city behind as you set out from Carlisle, heading east along the Hadrian’s Wall Path. As the wall was predominantly dirt and turf in this section there is very little evidence on the wall remaining however, the route does take you through charming villages, lush countryside, and gentle rolling hills.

In the evening, unwind and relax at Florres on the Wall, a family run bunk house. All rooms are en-suite with underfloor heating, and you can enjoy a fully licensed bar to relax after your day’s walk. Continental breakfast is included and they also offer lovely home-cooked meals and the option of a packed lunch.

Day 3 ♥

Walton to Greenhead (10 miles)

Set off from Walton and continue east along the iconic Hadrian’s Wall Path, where the trail begins to weave through some of the most dramatic and wild landscapes of the Northumberland countryside. On this day, you’ll start to see more visible evidence of the wall itself, from stretches of stonework to ancient forts and milecastles, bringing the Roman frontier vividly to life.

Arrive in Greenhead in the evening, a welcoming village where you can rest and recharge at Greenhead Hostel. Here we can eat next door at the hotel and chill at our hostel which includes a fully equipped kitchen area, quiet room, outside picnic are and lounge with TV, pool table & table football.

Day 4 ♥

Greenhead to Once Brewed (7.5 miles)

Leave Greenhead behind and continue east along the Hadrian’s Wall Path, moving deeper into the stunning landscapes of Northumberland National Park. Today’s walk is rich with history, taking you past well-preserved Roman forts, defensive walls, and ancient milecastles, giving a real sense of the scale and significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trail winds through open moorland and rolling hills, offering breathtaking panoramas and plenty of opportunities to pause and soak in the scenery.

Arrive in Once Brewed, a charming village perfectly positioned for hikers, where we’ll be staying at the YHA. The village also offers a great local pub, the Twice Brewed Inn, and the National Landscape Discovery Centre, giving plenty of options to relax, enjoy a meal, and recharge.

Day 5 ♥

Once Brewed to Chollerford (12.5 miles)

This section of Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most spectacular, so keep your camera close as you journey through rugged countryside dotted with Roman ruins and forts. A poignant highlight is Sycamore Gap, famously known as the film. Tragically, the beloved 120-year-old sycamore was felled in 2023. However, the stump has sprouted new shoots! Symbolizing resilience and the enduring spirit of the landscape.

Arrive in Chollerford, a picturesque village full of charm and local character. Here, you’ll enjoy the luxury of The George Hotel, where you can relax in comfort after the day’s hike. With beautifully appointed rooms, cozy dining, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Day 6 ♥

Chollerford to Heddon on the Wall (14.5 miles)

Start your walk alongside the B6318, a road famously built directly on top of Hadrian’s Wall. As you near Heddon, you’ll join the ancient Roman road and begin to spot increasing traces of the Wall itself, culminating in the peaceful village of Heddon-on-the-Wall, home to an intact 100-metre stretch of Hadrian’s Broad Wall. This section is also ideal for a visit to the nearby Vindolanda Roman Fort, one of the most fascinating Roman sites along the route.

A warm Northumbrian welcome awaits our group at Houghton North Farm, situated right beside the Hadrian’s Wall Trail. The high-quality bunk-style accommodation surrounds a central courtyard and includes access to a self-catering kitchen with a light breakfast, as well as a comfortable TV lounge with internet. Local amenities such as village pubs, a restaurant, and shops are just a short distance away in Heddon-on-the-Wall.

Day 7 ♥

Leaving Heddon-on-the-Wall, your walk alongside Hadrian’s Wall gradually gives way to the wide, rolling landscape of the River Tyne, which you follow all the way to Wallsend, before reaching the lively city of Newcastle upon Tyne. Crossing the finish line together is a celebration of all you’ve accomplished and the laughs, stories, and friendships made along the way.

By Car

For anyone wanting to drive, you can leave your cars at both the start and finish points. After completing the hike from east to west, it’s easy to get back to your car at the starting point: simply take a direct train from Newcastle/Wallsend to Carlisle—trains run every hour and the journey takes around 1 hour 35 minutes—then take a short taxi from Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway. This makes the full 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall adventure straightforward without needing to arrange complicated car shuttles.

Getting to the Start By Pubic Transportation

Bowness on Solway is best reached via Carlisle by train, then local bus 93 (45 minutes journey) or taxi (30 minutes) to Bowness.

Getting Home By Pubic Transportation

Wallsend is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro (Yellow Line). You can take the Metro to Newcastle City Centre (about 20 minutes)

Newcastle Central Station is just a short walk from Monument Station. From there, you can catch national rail services to most major UK cities.

There are also local buses and taxis that connect to Newcastle city centre from Wallsend.

If anyone would like to stay overnight on the first or last evening, please let me know—I can coordinate and provide accommodation options.

Megan is your Mountain Leader and will be your hiking guide & host. To get to know Megan a little more head to Emma & The Team.
