Step back in time as you explore the historic village of Eyam, nestled in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Known as the “Plague Village,” Eyam became famous during the devastating outbreak of the Black Death in 1665–1666, when its courageous residents chose to isolate themselves to prevent the disease from spreading to neighbouring communities. Their remarkable sacrifice saved countless lives, though many villagers tragically lost their own.
As you wander through the village, you’ll discover small plaques outside many cottages, each telling a poignant story with the names, ages, and dates of death of those who succumbed to the plague in that very home.
The walk also takes you beyond the village into the peaceful surrounding countryside, following scenic trails across open moorland, through Riley Woods, and alongside Jumber Brook, offering a perfect contrast to Eyam’s fascinating history.
If time allows, a visit to the Eyam Museum is highly recommended. Through informative displays, films, and exhibitions, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the village’s extraordinary story of courage, isolation, and survival.
