Route Description
One of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks, Pen-y-Ghent’s stepped, domed outline dominates the surrounding landscape and has led people to describe it as being like a crouching lion or shaped like the prow of a boat. Pen-y-Gent meaning ‘Hill of the Winds’ in Welsh is the smallest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks standing at 694m (2,277 feet) high.
Parking at Helwith Bridge we will set off up Moor Head Lane, quite a steep start but we will be walking on a good path. We will continue until we hit a junction and turn left along Long Lane until we reach the Pen-y-Gent trig point. There is a little structure at the top where we can sit and reward our selves with some snacks and beautiful views of the Yorkshire Dales.
We will then follow a stone a path taking us to Horton to Ribblesdale and passed Pen-y-Gent Cafe. We will walk over a footbridge with river Ribble on the left. We will continue to follow the river until we get back to the car park where we started. For those that would like to stay for a drink we can take a pause at Helwith Bridge Inn before heading back home.
All of our hiking leaders hold the relevant qualifications and have heaps of knowledge on the plants, landscapes and history of our national parks. The leader will create a WhatsApp group before the event providing all the information you need and you ladies can also use the group to organise car share and get to know each other.
