On this one day course you will learn;
– How to read a map
– How to use a compass
– How to use timing and pacing
– How to plan, implement and create navigation strategies based on the above skills

This 1 day navigation course will give you the skills and confidence to get out and explore the dales, moors and mountains on your own or with family and friends. It is designed for beginners who want to be able to use a map confidently in the outdoors, plan your own walks and follow paths and other linear features.
– You will learn to understand the fundamentals of reading maps, including how to use symbols, scales and handrail features like roads and walls to guide you along the route.
– You will be able to orientate your map enabling you to ‘read’ the land around you.
– You will be able to estimate how long a walk will take you by being able measure distance.
– To avoid getting lost, you’ll also learn the fundamentals of using a compass as well as how to pair it with a map.
– You will also learn how to create your own routes away from the crowds.
We will meet at the Penny Pot Cafe where there is a brief welcome & classroom session before heading out and we will also make time for a drink to review the day’s events before we finish.
What do I need to bring with me?
OS Map of The Peak District: Dark Peak Area OL1 1:25 000
Compass: Silva Expedition 4 which is a DofE recommended product

Dogs
Well behaved dogs are more than welcome, there may be livestock around so they may need to stay on the leads for parts of it.
