Ellie’s World: Celebrating the Person Beyond the Autism Diagnosis
Ellie is 24 and lives in Southport with her mum, Mel, her dad, Richard, and her big sister, Emma. Like many autistic people, Ellie experiences a world that isn’t always designed with her needs in mind, and some days can bring challenges that others may not see.
But Ellie’s story is one of strength, determination, and the incredible power of family support. With the constant love and encouragement of those around her, she continues to grow in confidence, embrace her independence, and achieve so much in her own unique way.
Ellie brings joy, personality, and a wonderful sense of fun to those who know her. Her journey is filled with proud moments, meaningful achievements, and everyday victories that show just how much she is capable of. With her family by her side, she continues to thrive, creating a life full of experiences
Understanding Ellie’s Autism
Autism is an important part of Ellie’s story and helps us understand the way she experiences the world. Ellie communicates in her own unique way and does not always use spoken words. She has echolalia, meaning she may repeat words or phrases she has heard as a way of processing information and communicating.
Ellie expresses her happiness through singing, sharing her unique personality and joy with those around her. Like many autistic people, she can sometimes find unfamiliar situations or unexpected changes overwhelming and may need extra time to process information.
When Ellie feels anxious or distressed, she may use verbal stimming, such as making repetitive sounds, to help her self-regulate. These are important ways Ellie navigates the world around her.
While autism is part of Ellie’s story, it does not define her. Ellie is a unique individual with her own personality, strengths, interests, and wonderful qualities that make her who she is.
The Moment the Adventure Began
Let’s rewind to May 2025, when Ellie’s mum, Mel, had just completed the Women Outdoors Beginner’s Navigation Course alongside three friends.
After the course, Mel sat with her friends, enjoying a well-earned glass of wine and reflecting on the day’s adventures. Naturally, the conversation turned to one question: “What’s next?”
As they browsed the upcoming Women Outdoors trips, the Norway Winter Wonderland adventure quickly caught their attention. Mel knew straight away that Ellie would love the experience and didn’t want to go without her.
Her friends were incredibly supportive and agreed they would all take on the adventure together, with Ellie included. Mel knew there could be challenges along the way—from the cold weather to the activities and unfamiliar surroundings—but her positive “can-do” attitude gave her the confidence that, with the right support, Ellie could absolutely be part of this incredible experience.
And so, the decision was made. The trip was booked, and a brand-new adventure began.
Stepping Into the Winter Wonderland
Nine months later, the adventure became a reality, and Ellie and Mel arrived in Norway ready to experience something completely new. After a days travelling, they reached the beautiful farmhouse that would become their home for the week.
As with any new experience, arriving somewhere unfamiliar took a little time for Ellie to settle. New surroundings, a different environment, and the excitement of what lay ahead meant she needed a little time to adjust. Once she and Mel had settled into their cosy wooden cabin and enjoyed a good night’s rest, they woke up ready for their first Norwegian adventure: ice fishing.
Stepping outside into the winter landscape felt like entering another world. The snow-covered landscapes stretching as far as the eye could see. Wrapped up in warm layers and equipped with their ice shoes, the group headed out across the frozen ground, ready to try their luck.
For Ellie, ice fishing was a magical experience. It reminded her of the cartoon Pingu, and she was fascinated by the idea of catching a fish beneath the ice. The group gathered around their fishing holes waiting to see what might happen. While the fish remained elusive that day, Ellie loved being part of the experience and enjoyed every moment of the adventure.
After a memorable day outdoors, returning to the warmth of the farmhouse was a welcome treat. The group gathered around the tables by the huge fire in the dining room, sharing stories from the day while enjoying delicious homemade food prepared by their wonderful Norwegian host, Camille, who thoughtfully catered for Ellie’s gluten-free diet.
The following day brought another exciting Norwegian experience—a musk ox safari. Ellie was excited at the possibility of seeing these incredible animals in their natural environment. The day brought some stronger winds, and the musk ox had moved higher up towards the mountain peaks, making them more difficult to spot.
As the conditions changed the higher we went, a few members of the group made the decision to head back early and warm up. Although Ellie and Mel didn’t get the close encounter with the musk ox they had hoped for, the day was still filled with adventure, new experiences, and the excitement of exploring Norway’s incredible winter landscape.
Chasing Joy on a Husky Sled
The next morning, they woke to a beautiful bright blue sky and they could truly take in the incredible Norwegian landscape around them. Mountains covered in green trees, topped with sparkling snow-covered peaks, stretched into the distance, while the fresh snow glistened like a million tiny diamonds in the sunlight.
Feeling refreshed and inspired by the beauty surrounding them, Ellie, Mel, and the rest of the group headed out to explore the town of Otta before moving on to the activity Ellie had been most excited about—dog sledding.
For Mel, meeting the dogs and learning how to guide the sled was a wonderful surprise. It was a much more hands-on experience than simply sitting back and holding the reins; learning to work with the dogs and understand how the team moved together made it even more special.
Meanwhile, Ellie was tucked up warmly in the sled, completely in her element. As they glided through the snowy landscape at exhilarating speeds, she sang loudly with pure happiness, filling the winter air with her joy. It was one of those moments where everyone could see just how much she was enjoying the experience.
For Mel, something shifted in that moment too. After spending time preparing, planning, and thinking about how everything would work, she found herself able to simply be present. She had to trust the dogs, trust the journey, and allow herself to enjoy the adventure unfolding in front of her.
Together, they raced across the sparkling snow, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, laughter, and a sense of freedom that they would both remember forever.
The Brightest Star
That evening, they relaxed in the warmth of the hot tub, allowing the day’s adventures to slowly melt away. Above them, the sky stretched endlessly, clear and untouched by light pollution, revealing a blanket of sparkling stars. It was one of those rare moments where everything felt peaceful and perfectly still.
Then came the icing on the cake—Ellie, full of happiness and confidence, treated the group to her own rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. As everyone clapped and cheered her on, Ellie laughed with delight. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand still, and everything felt just right.
The final day brought another chance to embrace the Norwegian winter, with sledding on the agenda. By now, Ellie was completely in her element. After playfully pretending she didn’t want to go, she soon found herself heading down the slope with a big smile—leaving Mel at the top watching nervously and hoping she wouldn’t disappear off course halfway down!
Thankfully, one by one, everyone made it safely to the bottom, windswept, smiling, and feeling very much alive after another unforgettable adventure.
We Did It!
Looking back on the adventure, Mel describes it as a true rollercoaster of emotions—filled with moments of uncertainty, challenges to navigate, and unforgettable highs. But above everything else, she feels an overwhelming sense of pride in Ellie and everything she achieved.
Together, they returned home with a heart full of memories, new experiences, and moments they will treasure forever.
Mel is incredibly grateful for the women in the group, whose kindness, patience, and genuine warmth towards Ellie made such a difference throughout the trip. Their acceptance and encouragement helped create a space where Ellie could relax, be herself, and fully enjoy the adventure.
She is also thankful for the cosy wooden cabin they shared, which became a little haven after each day’s adventures, and for the thoughtful touches that made the experience even more special—especially Camilla’s delicious gluten-free porridge prepared especially for Ellie.
Mel also reflects on Emma’s support and the calm reassurance she brought throughout the journey. Knowing there was always someone alongside them to help navigate any challenges gave Mel confidence that, together, they could find a way through anything—and they did.
Opening up the world – one beautiful moment at a time
Ellie lives a full, vibrant, and inspiring life. Alongside her incredible Norway adventure—including ice fishing, husky sledding, and so many unforgettable moments—she has achieved so much more.
Ellie has successfully completed her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, a fantastic achievement that reflects her determination, commitment, and willingness to take on new challenges. She is also a proud Parkrun Ambassador and recently celebrated reaching an incredible milestone: her 250th Parkrun.
Mel couldn’t be prouder of everything Ellie has achieved and the person she continues to become. Together, they share Ellie’s journey with the world through Facebook using #AusomeEllie—a celebration of her strength, personality, achievements, and the many things she shows are possible.
Autism should never be a barrier to experiencing adventure, exploring the world, or creating memories. Sometimes, with a few thoughtful adjustments, a little extra support, and people who believe in what is possible, incredible experiences can happen.
When we choose to understand, to learn, and to make space for everyone, the world becomes a more welcoming place.
Because the world is full of wonder, and Ellie has only just begun. There are so many more places to discover, experiences to embrace, and adventures waiting around the corner.
So keep exploring, Ellie. Keep showing the world exactly what you’re capable of.
You truly are awesome.
Your Mum, Mel.
