Discover the Adventure of Thru-Hiking
Discover the Adventure of Thru-Hiking: More Than Just a Day on the Trail
For many women, the idea of spending time in the great outdoors starts with a simple day hike—a few hours on a trail, soaking in nature, and enjoying a break from the daily routine. For those looking to extend that experience and embrace a deeper adventure, there’s an even more exhilarating journey: thru-hiking.
What is Thru Hiking?
Thru-hiking is the challenge of hiking an entire long-distance trail from start to finish in one continuous journey. Unlike a day hike, which may last a few hours or a single day, thru-hiking is an extended adventure—spanning multiple days, weeks, or even months—depending on the trail. Whether it’s the iconic Appalachian Trail, the West Highlands Way, or a lesser-known local trail, thru-hiking is about embracing endurance, exploration, and the transformative power of nature.
Why Thru-Hiking is So Exciting?
Immersive Experience: You’re living in nature, not just visiting it. Each day brings new landscapes, wildlife encounters, and the satisfaction of self-reliance.
Personal Growth: Thru-hiking challenges both body and mind, building resilience and inner strength.
Community and Camaraderie: Trails are filled with fellow adventurers, creating lasting friendships and shared memories.
Connection to Nature: Days on the trail allow you to experience natural rhythms, from mountain sunrises to starlit nights.
How It Differs From a Day Hike
Day hikes are perfect for a quick escape, but thru-hiking transforms the experience:
Duration: Multi-day or even multi-week journeys versus a few hours.
Planning: Gear, food, navigation, and endurance are critical.
Accommodation: Depending on the trail you choose, you can camp under the stars for a true wilderness experience or stay in hotels, hostels, or guesthouses along the route for more comfort and convenience.
Adventure: You encounter unexpected challenges—weather, trail conditions, and remote terrain—which make the journey thrilling and unpredictable.

I have done a few walks and trips with Women Outdoors. I started with light hikes in my local area, then moderate hikes to build my confidence. More recently, I have travelled to Slovakia and Norway. Both trips have been amazing! From the logistics, to the travel arrangements, accommodation and communication. The guides and hosts on the trips have been incredibly supportive, sensitive and encouraging. I have done things I never imagined I would do and met so many amazing and inspiring women.Posted on Claire DivallTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Understand the map more and finally get the compass would definitely recommend 😄Posted on Chandrima RodrigoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wow, what a trip! I've just returned from Norway after a week of amazing experiences that included hikes in National Parks offering breathtaking views, to picking wild blueberries, to sailing past beautiful fjords waterfalls, to river rafting with water splashes and adrenaline rushes, to chatting and discussing about the day's activities over a lovely evening meal in a now converted but 13th century farmhouse, to taking a bite of the best cinnamon bun! Travelling solo I met everyone for the first time, but the group created a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, where all were made to feel welcome. There was something special about sharing this experience with a group of like-minded ladies. Thank you Kate our Womens Outdoors host, and Camilla, Honza from Sjoa for the great organizing and guiding, not forgetting Maya and Christian who were a part of some experiences. Photos do not do justice to the spectacular views but sharing a few.Posted on Liz JonasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I went to Norway on my first trip with Women Outdoors and it was truly the trip of a lifetime. The communication and organisation of the trip was brilliant, with a whatsapp group created for everyone to chat and get to know each other in advance of the trip. Emma and the team put so much care and attention into planning the trips and it really shows. As it was the first trip to Norway, it was adjusted and adapted to suit the group as it went along to make sure everyone was comfortable and there were options for everyone. I felt looked after and supported throughout the whole trip. I had the best time and would reccomend to anyone!!Posted on Karen McElroyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I really loved the Norweigen adventure in August. The location was perfect, nestled in the countryside surrounded by pine 🌲, mountains and flowing glacier rivers. The organisers Emma, Camlla and Jan supported us on some fantastic hikes and visit to the fjord. A highlight for me was the white water rafting - exhilarating!!! The food was all home cooked and really 😍. I felt really well supported on the trip and had lots of fun. Everyone in the group was super friendly and made the trip a joy. Thank you!!!Posted on AngelaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Just experienced the most amazing holiday in Norway with Women Outdoors.
